Author Interview with Glynn Stewart - Author of Alien Arcana (The Starship's Mage Series Book 4)

Hi Glynn! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview about your new book Alien Arcana, and The Starship's Mage series! What inspired you to write The Starship's Mage series?

Starship’s Mage began as a short story I wrote as a mental exercise, basically on the logic of “if we’re handwaving anyway, why not make it just magic?”

How many books are you planning to write in the series?

…a lot. As many as it takes to tell the stories I have.

Do your characters have complete control of the story, or do you have all the control?

Somewhere in between. I draw the skeleton based on the story I want to tell, but they flesh in the muscles and skin as I go.

Who is your favorite character in the series to write?

Damien, hands down. He’s probably the closest of any my characters to me in terms of personality.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

The Starship’s Mage series is generally a blast to write as it’s a fascinating universe with characters I like. I have the most fun when Damien is mouthing of at people though.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

The ending sequence. I know and Damien knows what qualifies as a legitimate threat to him, but the reader may not and Damien is extremely powerful. Getting across the reader that a situation is truly dangerous is a tricky balancing act.

Are you planning on expanding and writing any spinoff series? For instance a prequel series, or a series about another hand?

I’m planning a spin-off series after Damien’s story reaches its stable point, based off a character who shows up briefly in Alien Arcana.

Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel are influential in your work?  What impact have they had on your writing?

David Weber and Lois Bujold are probably the two authors who are most influential on my actual writing (the similarities between a Martian Hand and a Barrayaran Imperial Auditor aren’t entirely coincidence). I’ve studied both what they do right and what they do wrong and try to emulate the former while avoiding the latter!

Do you have anything else you want to say to your readers and fans?

Just… thank you. I get to spend my time telling amazing stories and its all because of your support.
