Paying The Price (The Empire of Bones Saga Book 5) By Terry Mixon

Admiral Jared Mertz is finally ready to head home, after over a year of being sent on his exploration mission. Not to mention the fact that he isn't returning in the same ship he left with. He's bringing a few new ones with him. Right before they leave to head home they make a a breakthrough discovery. Getting home was made easier and faster. But how will they be received? Princess Kelsey is now basically Wonder Woman, and so many ships and people were lost in their fight against the Rebel Empire. Not to mention that Kelsey's brother, the crown prince and heir to the thrown, hates Jared with a passion. He sees Jared as an usurper trying to steal his throne. Admiral Jared is the half brother of Prince Ethan and Princess Kelsey, but he wants nothing to do with ruling the Empire. Will he be able to convince Ethan of his sincerity, or will Ethan go beserk and try to start a civil war?

Definitely the best book in the series so far! The storyline is heading in an awesome direction, and I can't wait to see where it goes. The author has created an awesome universe in this series. The writing and dialog are top notch. I highly recommend reading this series. It's by far one of the best I've read in a long time!

Ghosts of The Empire (The Empire of Bones Saga Book 4) By Terry Mixon

Admiral Jared and Princess Kelsey stopped the rebellion. However the Captain of the fleet from their homeworld Avalon, decided to not follow Princess Kelsey orders, and try to go home on their own. Unfortunately they decided on a course that took them into a major Rebel Empire sector. Captured and their flagship destroyed, Admiral Jared and Princess Kelsey must rescue them, or face the Rebel Empire discovering their home planet. Little do they know that when they reach the rebel system, they will find a whole lot more than they bargained for. Including a planet full of humans, and research facilities thought destroyed 500 years ago! Can they rescue their crew of people in time?

Loved this book! Well written, and the dialog is even better than the past book. I enjoy where this series has gone so far and look forward to seeing more from this author. He has done a great job with this series! I highly recommend checking it out!

Command Decisions (The Empire of Bones Saga Book 3) By Terry Mixon

Commander Jared and Princess Kelsey have won a hard fought battle over Erosi, and discovered that a remnant of the Old Empire still exists. Not to mention a force of people survived the Pale Ones on Erosi, and have lived underground for 500 years! Jared has pledged to help them against the Old Empire fleet remanant coming to Erosi soon. However the arrival of a small fleet from Jared and Kelsey's home planet throw a wrench in all their plans. The captain in charge of the fleet hates Jared with a passion. With a battle on two fronts, can Commander Jared and Princess Kelsey stop the Old Empire from revealing their existence to the rest of the remnant?

I love how the author has written this series. Each book is better than the last, and they are so addicting! The dialog is fantastic, witty, and hilarious! It keeps you on your toes, and the edge of your seat, the whole way through. This hoas easily become one of my all time favorite space opera series. I highly recommend it! Check it out!

Veil Of Shadows (The Empire of Bones Saga Book 2) By Terry Mixon

Princess Kelsey and Commander Jared have their work cut out for them. With their ship damaged beyond major repair, they decide to repair the derelict Old Empire battlecruiser. With the help of their new friends they begin to repair the ship and crew it with people from both worlds. Little do they know a rebellion is working behind the scenes. They plan to strike back at the Pale Ones, as soon as they get the ship up and running. What do the rebels have planned? Can Princess Kelsey and Commander Jared keep the rebels from destroying everything they have achieved?

What an amazing book! Very well written, and the dialog is fantastic! I love the character development, and it's so easy to be drawn into the book like you are there experiencing the story with them. The author has created a great universe, and has the awesome responsibility of making each book live up to that. He definitely has with book 2! I highly recommend reading this series. It has amazing potential! I can't wait to see where the story leads!

The Empire was reborn and now travels the stars once more. Jared is a Commander in the Imperial Navy. He is also the bastard son of the Emperor. He is being sent on a dangerous mission to explore beyond the Empire's most distant borders, in search of remnants from the old Empire and the lost planet of Terra herself. At the last minute Jared's half sister, The Princess Kelsey is sent along to be an Ambassador on his mission. He is livid! They never got along and she seems to hate him! The Little Ships (Alexis Carew Series Book 3) By J.A. Sutherland

Lieutenant Alexis Carew has come far, and earned her promotion. She is assigned to a new ship and given a special mission for the war with Hanover. The French Republic is neutral in the war. Alexis was a prisoner of war briefly, and held on a world annexed by Hanover over a hundred years ago. That world is full of French people. The fleet guarding it is made up entirely of French peoples. Alexis mission is to convince the French Republic to rescue that fleet, and those world's annexed by Hanover and join the war. Will she be successful in bringing the French into the war?

Best book in the series so far! The author has created a series that is fast paced, well written, and very worth the read. The characters are extremely well developed. I am enthralled with this series. I can't wait for book 4 to come out. I highly recommend checking it out!

Mutineer (Alexis Carew Series Book 2) By J.A. Sutherland

Midshipman Alexis Carew is the only female officer serving on a Navy ship in the fringe worlds. Now with the war on she could be sent anywhere. She has earned the respect and admiration of her fellow, and commanding officers. When the captain of the HMS Hermione finds out about her, he demands that her commanding officer find a way to throw her out of the navy. He sticks up for her, so the captain transfers her to his ship. He makes it well known of his dislike of women in the navy, and sets to making her life on ship a living hell. Will Midshipmen Carew rise to the occasion and overcome the hate, and discrimination?  Or will she fail and be thrown out of the navy?

The series only gets better with each book. Alexis is a strong main character, and it's so easy to fall for her charms. The book is very well written and the dialog even better than book 1. I also enjoy the technological side of the series. The author goes out of his way to describe how the ship and technology work in space. I highly recommend this series!

Into The Dark (Alexis Carew Series Book 1) By J.A. Sutherland

Alexis Carew is the granddaughter of a plantation owner on a fringe world of the Empire. She unfortunately can't inherit her family's land as she is a woman. Her grandfather is trying to change the law so she can inherit the land without having to marry. Her husband would own everything anyway not her. With her prospects of a husband few and far between, she decides to enlist in the galactic navy. At least if she ends up not being able to inherit her family's land, she will have a career to fall back on. Little does she know, her decision will change her life forever!

This is a great book series. One of the best space operas I've read! I really like the universe the author has created, The characters are definitely enthralling. I was drawn into the story from page one. The dialog is fantastic and very funny. I highly recommend this book and the series!

excerpt

Skye was a coward. She knew that, but she couldn’t bring herself to stay and watch Sid and Aspen commit suicide. There was no way the council would allow Aspen to become queen.
Not to mention that then Skye would have to know the exact moment when she died, because anyone who pledged loyalty to Sid would die the second he did. No, running away was better. She should have enough time to get to her parents before death came. She’d able to say goodbye.
This was her fault. Pearl had told her to keep Aspen safe. Instead she’d gone and made everything worse. Maybe if she’d kept Aspen at home, Sid would’ve been fine.
If she’d never given Sid that damn loyalty seal, she wouldn’t be this close to death. She wasn’t sure what she was thinking at that time. Part of her thought he’d make it. Another part didn’t care whether she lived or died. It wasn’t like she’d have much of a life anymore.
When Sid became King she found Everett and begged him to remove the seal that marked how much she loved him. He did and now she longer had a swirl of gold on her ankle. But Everett warned her there would be a price to pay. She gladly paid it at the time, but but she hadn’t expected to feel so empty.
For a half second she thought about heading to Everett’s instead of her parents. Maybe he could remove the loyalty seal before she died. She shook her head. How cowardly of her. The price would not be worth it. That was for sure.
She was only fooling herself though. She would make the same decision if given the choice. Aspen was the only way they could possibly survive. When Skye dropped Aspen off , there were three possible outcomes. One, she and Sid would die and all those with loyalty seals would as well. Two, Helios, the final dragon that Sid needed to secure all the loyalty seals got to him before the council had a chance to killed him. Or three. Aspen could be become queen. She’d have to convince the council that she should be queen and pass the queen’s tests She hoped Aspen could do it.
She felt her wings tiring. This could be the beginning of her death. She hadn’t known anyone who had died because of the loyalty seal and didn’t know how it worked. She spotted a lake below her and decided to stop and get a drink. She had to make it home.
Skye landed a little rougher than normal. This had to be the end. She staggered over to the water and took a deep drink. The water sparkled under the full moon. Skye stretched her wings out and swiveled her neck around to scratch her nose. She froze. Her wing was no longer silver.
This must be part of her death. Or at least that was what she tried to convince herself of. Adrenaline coursed through her veins and she no longer felt tired. Dragons didn’t change color before they died. In fact dragons never changed color. Except when they became king. Then they turned black.
Skye spun neck around the other direction. It was more than her wings that had changed. Her whole body was now a deep coal black.
This was impossible. There was no way she could become king. Sid was king. Unless he died. Then someone else would take his place, but that someone had to be a full royal dragon and male. Of which she was neither. There had to be some huge mistake. This had to be a dream. She stuck her head in the cold water and came out again. Still black. This wasn’t possible.
Unless.
That stupid prophecy.
The one that said three kings would rise. The one that said they could come from other races. But she was still female. Something was definitely wrong. She was also still very much alive. She couldn’t go see her parents now, not like this. No, she had to go see the one dragon who could explain how this happened.
She wracked her brain trying to think of everything she’d learned about the prophecy. She loved history and so she studied a lot, but this baffled her. Nothing in the prophecy said anything about a girl. She’d spent hours listening to Everett’s boring details about the prophecy, yet he hadn’t mentioned that females could become kings. He was so in for it.

Chapter 2
Skye changed direction and instead of heading south for the warm waters of the gulf, she flew northwest. Her mind tried to make sense of what just happened. Her anger for Everett had turned into fear of what was to come. Everett would have the answers. But she might not like the answers he gave.
She certainly didn’t like the consequences of his last answer. To never love again. That was the cost of removing the seal to Sid. She gladly gave it up. But now. Now something was missing and she ached to love again.
After an hour she flew over Yellowstone and marveled at the fact that she wasn’t dead. That meant Sid and Aspen were still alive as well. Perhaps Aspen had become queen. Skye hoped so. She liked her. Plus, if the prophecy was fulfilled, Sid would be the right leader for the job.
She flew over Sid’s house and faltered for a second. Rowan was asleep in there. Sweet Rowan. He’d become her best friend. Her heart tightened at the thought of never seeing him again. It was strange how the ache she often felt disappeared when she was around him. He made her feel human.
She didn’t know what would happen when she found Everett. But if she was a king and the prophecy was being fulfilled, she’d be too caught up in the dragon wars to even think about her human friends. She supposed it couldn’t hurt to stop and say goodbye. She owed him that. After all, he’d been there for her when no one else had been.
She dove for the house before she talked herself out of it. She wanted to feel human again, if only for a minute.

Guest Post By Charles Day

What motivated you to choose the horror genre, and write The Legend of The Pumpkin Thief?

As a child, I always loved Halloween, including the night before. The cool, crisp autumn winds howling outside. The brisk air racing through my open windows. The colors of changing leaves, a golden brown or bright red and orange. These reminders always seem to get me in that halloweenish mood. But above all, it’s the costumes, the candy, and the scary movies played over and over on the TV, right around Halloween. These are the kinds of things that send chills up my spine, goose bumps all over my flesh, and make me love this holiday each year.

When I was young, Halloween was the night when all my friends and I would dress up and head out to cause terror and mayhem in our town. We’d gather our eggs and pick a few of the neighbors we despised all year long, and we’d send our yolk filled  projectiles flying toward their windows, their doors, at whatever we could hit on their property. It was fair game for us.

Yes, we were twisted kids. We were out to cause trouble, but not only to our neighbors in town. There were the older kids, the seniors in our high school. Some of them were jocks, linebackers on the football team, or wrestlers who’d easily twist us like a pretzel if they managed to grab a hold of us. Of course, after a few Halloweens tossing eggs their way, or using shaving cream to cover their bikes or cars, they eventually caught onto us and found a way to exact their revenge.

I can still remember that one Halloween night years ago. You see, after finally catching on to our antics, they set a trap for us and unfortunately . . . we fell for it. Almost had my thirteen-year-old butt kicked by some really big boys that Halloween night. I’ll never forget. True fear of unknown proportions visited me in the dark woods that late evening.

They were successful in their trap because they armed themselves with walkie-talkies (hope I’m not showing my age here,) as part of their devilish idea. Dressed in their Halloween costumes and safely hidden behind masks, they strategically placed each other in different areas. Two were at one end of our block, an additional two at the other. Another was waiting on the opposite block for us. This was because many times we would jump over a neighbor’s fence, cross through the woods and come out on the next street over. Well, they knew all our secret paths by now. We were dead before we knew what was coming.

So, early this Halloween night we all left my parents’ house and headed on out to do some damage again in our neighborhood we always terrorized. We had our own costumes and our usual ammunition of eggs, shaving cream, and socks filled with baby powder. We were so ready.

When we finally found a few of these high school seniors congregated at the local country store, we were already hidden in a section of the woods, just a ways back. We secretly moved in closer, still safe behind large oaks and maple trees, and we tossed our eggs as far as our young arms could throw them, before running through the woods to the other street, scared, excited, full of adrenaline. Yes, the high from this chemical racing through our blood was so addictive. And then the screams were heard. “We’re going to get you little punks this year. You’re so dead!”

I’ll never forget the fear that Halloween night when we saw them coming from everywhere. We backtracked to get to our street, but they were already in front of my house, and two others were walking down the block toward my friend’s house. We were blocked in. Trapped!

They caught a few of us that night and drenched us in a mix of vinegar, oil, and who knows what else. Yep. Now that I look back, I’m just glad they didn’t kick the living snot out of our scrawny bodies. I’m guessing now that they felt we were too young, and the concoction they made up would have a lasting effect. Well, it sure did.

Halloween’s after that experience were still fun mind you, still filled with candy, parties, and scaring each other, but we did our best to hide whenever we saw the seniors roaming the neighborhood. I miss those days, though. But now I get to relieve these in my forthcoming children’s horror novel, THE LEGEND OF THE PUMPKIN THIEF, which is making a comeback fall 2016 with Month 9 Books middle grade imprint, Tantrum Books.  And I’m already working on the sequel. So I hope you all enjoy . . . The Halloween Legend.

The characters of my youth—both good and bad— only their names are changed, return to share their story again. I’ve added a new character to help me this time, a supernatural and evil, Pumpkin Thief, who decides to rein terror on this small fictitious neighborhood and especially those older kids who once messed with me. Now I call the shots. Hehehe!

This was my first YA novel, and soon after its first release back in 2012, it garnered many fans, caught the eyes of the Horror Writers Association, and quickly became nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award®. I didn’t win, but I received an awesome certificate as a finalist in the YA category.

After having 12 short stories published, I went on to write this Halloween tale, and never looked back. I wrote three more novels, getting them published over the last few years. Going into 2017, I’m still illustrating a comic book series based on my ADVENTURES OF KYLE McGERRT trilogy, trying to find a publisher or agent for my second middle-grade series, THE UNDERDWELLERS, and have started penning my third YA novel, MY FATHER, ASSASSIAN, a thriller set in NY.

I totally love writing, especially children’s fiction. I also love illustrating and drawing and sharing what I’ve learned with writing and how the publishing industry works. So, again, thank you for having me on your blog.

Keep imagining, reading and doing whatever makes you feel passionate.
